Ralph S. Baker, Ph.D. is TerraTherm’s Co-Founder, Chairman and Chief Scientist.  As CEO of TerraTherm throughout its first decade, Dr. Baker led the company’s early development and application of the ISTD technology.  He continues to be a leader in the company’s business development and R&D efforts, and manages TerraTherm’s marketing and intellectual property programs.  Dr. Baker serves as a Principal-in-Charge and Technical Director on selected TerraTherm’s projects.  A soil physicist with over 35 years of experience, Dr. Baker has authored over 65 publications on in-situ remediation, including four books.  Dr. Baker led the development of three comprehensive Engineer Manuals written for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on in-situ remediation: Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) and Bioventing (1996); In Situ Air Sparging (1997); and Multiphase Extraction (1999). He has served as technical advisor to government and industry on many remediation projects.

John M. Bierschenk, P.G. is TerraTherm's Co-Founder, CEO and President.  Mr. Bierschenk has overall responsibility for general management of the company.  In addition, he serves as TerraTherm's Vice President of Operations and Contracting Manager.  Mr. Bierschenk is a registered Professional Geologist in Pennsylvania (USA), and holds a BS in Geology as well as an MBA.  He has 28 years of technical, strategic and business management experience in the environmental and energy businesses; working as an environmental consultant, general manager of a soil and groundwater remediation equipment company, and as an exploration geophysicist.

Gorm Heron, Ph.D. is TerraTherm's Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer.  Dr. Heron has 21 years of experience in the environmental engineering field, with 14 years in design and management of in-situ thermal remediation projects, focusing on the treatment of CVOC DNAPL sites in soil and fractured rock.  From 1997-2004, Dr. Heron served as Principal Environmental Engineer with SteamTech Environmental Services, Inc., where he designed, oversaw and operated six major Steam-Enhanced Extraction (SEE) projects.  Based in TerraTherm's Bakersfield, CA office, Dr. Heron provides technical leadership and oversight in the design and application of ISTR and combined ISTD/SEE/ET-DSP™ systems. He is also TerraTherm’s lead on international ISTD projects.

John C. LaChance is TerraTherm's Vice President of Project Quality and Management.  Mr. LaChance has over 25 years of experience characterizing and remediating contaminated sites.  For the last ten years, he has been involved in the design, implementation, and assessment of in situ thermal remediation (ISTR) systems at numerous sites both in the U.S. and overseas.  Mr. LaChance currently manages several ISTR projects and research efforts and provides technical leadership in the design and implementation of ISTR.  He is also the author of numerous papers and presentations on ISTR and the hydrogeology of DNAPL sites.  Mr. LaChance is a member of TerraTherm's senior management team and is responsible for developing programs and providing guidance to ensure that all of TerraTherm's projects are implemented to the highest standards and that project performance metrics and client expectations are met within budget and on schedule. 

James P. Galligan, P.E.  is TerraTherm’s Vice President of Engineering. Mr. Galligan has over 20 years of experience with in-situ and ex-situ remediation system design, installation, operation and troubleshooting, including over 10 years experience with in-situ thermal treatment projects.  He has managed dozens of remediation projects from design and bidding through construction, start-up and operation.  Mr. Galligan has conducted numerous remedial technology pilot tests, feasibility studies and life-cycle cost evaluations.  He has extensive experience in cost estimating and health and safety management.  Mr. Galligan has been instrumental in each of the detailed remedial design and implementation efforts that TerraTherm has carried out.  

Deborah A. Jackson  is TerraTherm’s Chief Financial Officer.  Ms. Jackson is responsible for financial management and information systems as well as overall administration.  She brings 24 years' related experience serving in senior executive roles in both privately held and publicly traded firms, nationally and internationally, across a number of industries.  Her expertise in large-scale manufacturing processes and related cost accounting, together with her track record driving high growth and profitability beyond industry benchmarks make her an excellent fit for this role.

Ralph S. Baker

Ralph Baker is Chairman of the Board of TerraTherm, Inc. A founder of TerraTherm, Dr. Baker has overall responsibility for TerraTherm’s application and development of the ISTD technology and leads TerraTherm’s sales, marketing and business development efforts. He serves as chief spokesperson for the company, making frequent presentations to groups around the U.S. Previously, he served as Technical Director at ENSR Consulting and Engineering, which at the time was a $170-million environmental firm with approximately 1,400 people at 70 offices in 17 countries. Dr. Baker served as lead technologist for the company's worldwide in-situ remediation practice, and played a key role on dozens of major projects for government and industry involving a wide range of innovative and conventional remediation technologies.

Baker previously founded and operated an environmental consulting firm in Maine for 10 years. He earned a Ph.D. in soil physics from the University of Massachusetts, an M.S. in soil chemistry from the University of Maine, and a B.S. in environmental conservation from Cornell University.  Dr. Baker serves on the Board of Directors of the Nashua River Watershed Association, an organization dedicated to advancing land and watershed protection and environmental education in the Nashua River watershed of Massachusetts and New Hampshire.


Greg Betterton

Greg Betterton is a partner in the law firm of Betterton & Tyler and is Managing Director of Bison Capital, LLC. Mr. Betterton has broad experience in private equity investing and serves in both director and advisory capacities in a variety of companies.

Mr. Betterton received a Master of Laws in Taxation from the University of Florida, a Juris Doctorate from Western New England School of Law, and a B.A. from the University of Virginia.

John Bierschenk is the CEO and President of TerraTherm, Inc. A founder of TerraTherm, he serves as the President and Chief Financial Officer, and assumes responsibility for developing standard operating procedures, managing projects and contracts as well. Previously, he served as the Manager of Remediation at ENSR Consulting and Engineering, at the time a $170-million environmental firm with approximately 1,400 people at 70 offices in 17 countries. Mr. Bierschenk was responsible for developing a design-build capability for the soil and groundwater remediation market sector and played a key role in this new business area. The department included 70 people in four business units. In addition, he was responsible for improving profitability for three under-performing business units.

Mr. Bierschenk previously served as General Manager for Oil Recovery Systems (ORS), a division of Groundwater Technology, Inc. The $12-million stand-alone division employed 90 people with responsibility for the design, manufacture and sales of soil and groundwater remediation equipment world-wide.

He earned a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from Regis College, Colorado, and a B.S. in Geology from the University of New Hampshire.

Jeffrey L. Powell

Mr. Powell is Vice President of Kadant, Inc., a leading supplier to the global pulp and paper industry. Previously he served as President and CEO of CASTion Corporation, a wastewater treatment technology company providing turn-key water treatment solutions to industry. Prior to joining CASTion, he worked for 14 years at Thermo Electron Corporation where he was founder and CEO of Thermo Retec, a $140 million publicly traded subsidiary of Thermo. Mr. Powell managed divisions engaged in soil remediation, nuclear waste management, fluids recycling, and environmental engineering and consulting. Prior to joining Thermo Electron, Mr. Powell spent the first 10 years of his career at Midland-Ross Corporation.

Mr. Powell holds a bachelors degree in engineering from the University of Toledo and a M.S. in Management from Florida Institute of Technology.

Nicholas A. Pappas

Nick Pappas is Vice President of MTDC, the Massachusetts Technology Development Corporation, a leading edge venture capital firm that addresses the "capital gap" for start-up and expansion of early-stage technology companies operating in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  He has been working with early-stage technology companies for over 10 years, advising management teams and boards of directors on market expansion, capital raising and merger and acquisition strategies. Mr. Pappas joined MTDC in 2009 and is responsible for identifying investment opportunities and working closely with MTDC portfolio companies.  Prior to joining MTDC, Mr. Pappas was a senior technology investment banker with Oppenheimer & Co., SVB Alliant, and Canaccord Adams (formerly Adams Harkness) both in Silicon Valley and Boston.

Mr. Pappas holds an MBA from Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from The University of Richmond.
